We are experts in dead animal removal, and take our job seriously. When removing dead animals, we do a COMPLETE job — not only do we remove the dead animal from your home or yard, we also decontaminate the area, deodorize it, and dispose of the animal or cremate it. If you aren't sure whether the stench in your house is due to a rotting carcass or another reason, we can sniff it out with our noses from our years of experience. We remove dead raccoons, dead opossums, dead skunks, dead squirrels, dead birds, even dead dogs and cats. We frequently remove dead rodents from inside walls, because poison kills rats and mice, who die in your house. We completely solve your dead animal problem by taking these steps:

  • Sniff out the dead animal if it is somewhere in your home
  • When necessary, for example if the animal is in a wall or under your house, cut a hole to remove the animal
  • Remove the dead animal, safely and completely (and seal the hole if needed)
  • Finish the job by decontaminating and deodorizing your home
  • Properly dispose of the dead animal through incineration or other means
  • Prevent it from happening again by finding out how they got in your house

Dead animal carcass removal is specialty work. Sometimes the job is simple, such as a dead opossum in the yard, in which case we can simply wear our gloves and respirator mask, bag the carcass, and take it away for incineration. Sometimes this is more complex, such as when the dead animal is under a home crawlspace, under a porch or deck or shed. Or if the animal is larger, such as a dog or a deer. The most complex cases are dead animals inside the house. The animal may have died inside the attic, or down in the walls, or the duct work, or any other part of the architecture. You may have a bad smell in your home, and you're not even sure what's causing it. We've removed not just dead animals, but rotting food, bad mold, etc. We specialize in locating the source of the smell, and we very commonly cut a hole in the ceiling or wall to remove the animal. We remove every bit of the carcass, mop up the juices, vacuum the maggots, spray it and wipe it down with disinfectant, cleaner, and we repair the hole we cut. In some cases we use ozone machines to neutralize odor.

Dayton Dead Animal Tip: Does a dead animal carcass cause flies?

Animals could die in indoor and outdoor areas. The death of critters in an area has different negative consequences. As carcasses decompose, they produce highly unpleasant odors, a clear indication of the presence of the critters on a property. Decomposing material, including carcasses, could also attract flies. Let's consider whether flies are characteristically attracted to dead animal carcasses.

How dead animal carcasses decompose
After animals die, their carcasses begin the natural process of decomposition. The decomposition of carcasses is aided by different natural components. Certain components of the ecosystem, known as decomposers, are specifically committed to the decay of natural materials.

Decomposers cause the natural decay of different natural materials, including carcasses. Flies are involved in the decomposition of carcasses.

Blow flies or flesh flies have commensal relationships with carcasses. They decompose the carcass because it provides the required environment for reproduction. The lifecycle of the flies goes through the egg, pupa, larva, and adult stages. The flies need carcasses for the first stage.

If an animal dies in an area, the carcass will attract flies which will lay their eggs on it. The eggs hatch into larvae, which populate the carcass. The larvae dwell on the carcass and thrive on it before proceeding to another area that will encourage their mutation to pupa. The pupa molts into an adult fly that then leaves the area.

Maggots are some of the main pests attracted to carcasses. The maggots come from house flies or blow flies that lay their eggs. The maggots seen around carcasses are basically the pupae of house flies or blow flies that are leaving the area in search of a suitable area for molting into adults.

Flies are basically attracted to carcasses because they provide the supporting environment for their reproduction. Because the flies are actively involved in the decomposition of carcasses, they are only drawn to carcasses that could still be decomposed. After a carcass can no longer support the flies, they stop flocking around it. As such, the newly hatched flies are not attracted to the carcass. The newly hatched flies will leave the area in search of other supporting areas where they can lay eggs. Larvae spend about 10 days around the carcass before they molt into pupae. It takes about 5 days for the pupae to develop into adults.

Flies and carcasses
Blow flies are especially known for their relationship with carcasses. They can track a carcass from miles away and infest it. The smell of carcasses can draw the flies from far distances.

As natural scavengers, blow flies are typically around areas with wastes and carcasses. They are outdoor flies that nest in areas around garbage bins, landfills, and kennels. The flies are drawn to carcasses that are indoors and outdoors. They can apply the tiniest of openings to access carcasses in indoor areas. Even the carcasses in hidden indoor areas are not free from the infestation of blow flies.

It is noteworthy that blow flies can tell the presence of a carcass in an area within a short time. Research indicates that the flies can tell when a carcass is in an area within 20 minutes of the death of the animal. The flies find the carcass and begin to decompose it. The decomposition leads to the production of strong odors which becomes a stronger indication of the presence of the critters in an area. It is also noteworthy that the flies can lay eggs immediately when they infest the critters. They can lay thousands of eggs which will develop into larvae within a short period.

Effects of flies attracted to dead animals
The increased activity of flies near dead animals in an area has numerous negative consequences. The flies can act as vectors of diseases. They can spread the diseases they carry when they lay eggs on different surfaces, including food. The direct activity of the flies on different surfaces could also spread diseases.
